A German court agreed to end the bribery trial of Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone in exchange for a $100m (£60m) payment from him. Mr Ecclestone's offer was based on an existing provision in German law. He went on trial in April, accused of paying a German banker 33m euros (£26m; $44m) to ensure that a company he favoured could buy a stake in F1. The ruling means he walks free from the district court in Munich and can continue running the sport. It also means Mr Ecclestone is found neither guilty nor innocent.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared the spread of Ebola in West Africa an international health emergency. So far more than 930 people have died from Ebola in West Africa this year.


US President Barack Obama authorised air strikes against Islamic militants in northern Iraq but will not send US troops back to the country. He said Islamic State (IS) fighters would be targeted to prevent the slaughter of religious minorities, or if they threaten US interests. On Friday the Pentagon said American aircraft attacked artillery that was being used against Kurdish forces defending the northern city of Irbil.
